Your Hosts

Your hosts.

Petla’s Place one of Westville’s most established and well-known guesthouses was originally founded by Leon and Petla Alkema way back in 1994. Over the past two decades they have seen thousands of happy guests, many of which becoming dear friends, coming and going through their doors. Originally from the Free State, they brought to the city with them the warm hospitality their native countryside is so well known for.

They are ably assisted by the ever smiling Doris Mzimela who has also been an integral part of Petla’s place right from the onset twenty years ago. Owner-run and hands-on they will ensure that all your needs are catered for, no matter how small.

Garden Creatures

Paradise Flycatcher on the nest
We pride ourselves in our well kept and our lush and leafy garden. This ensures that ample habitat is preserved for the myriad small animals and birds who call the tropical coastline home. With a garden birdlist of more then 130 species and several small and interesting mammals it is bound to make your stay, however brief a memorable one.
Here are a few creatures we encounter.

The highly sought after Narina Trogon
Birds: A surprisingly wide variety of birds (more than 100 species in fact) make their home within the boundaries of our garden. Some specials include, Woolly-necked Storks, African Goshawks, the ever present Purple Crescent Louries or Turaco’s as they are now called and the striking but ever elusive Narina Trogon.

Genet Kittens photographed in the garden.
Large spotted Genet. Not many people realize secretive creatures even exist in the suburban woodlands and fewer have ever seen them. However these two kittens were recently photographed in our garden!

Epualetted Fruit Bats
Epualetted Fruit Bats. The metallic ping of these large nocturnal creatures can be heard emanating throughout the warm tropical summer as they fly around the garden foraging on fruits.

The endemic and striking Natal Tree frog
Then for those with a larger appetite for nature, the Palmiet River nature reserve is a mere ten minutes away.
